History
Originally built as a first class carriage for Folkestone Vestibule Ltd, this railway carriage was later rebuilt by Pullman as a parlour car in 1919 and named Venus II; it was withdrawn from service in 1930. We believe it made its journey to Selsey a short while after, as other railway carriages had been arriving since 1923. Bought by Mr & Mrs Burgess in 1973, they planned to build a house on the land (now No.16) and sell the carriage, but couldn’t part with it and it became their family home for many years. After losing his youngest daughter to cancer in 2019, Mr.Burgess renamed the carriage ‘Sally’ in her memory. Since his passing later in the same year, his son Peter has unveiled many parts of the carriage that had been hidden for many years and began restoring it. The Heritage Trail walking guide which is a 2 mile walk around other railway carriages in Selsey can be found in the railway carriage when you arrive!
